FRIDAY AND WEEKEND OUTLOOK….SNOW IN OUR NEAR FUTURE??

GOOD MORNING! Well, after a rainy, cold, blah day today is much more welcomed to wake up to.  How many of you get SAD(Seasonal Affective  Disorder)?  I personally do. Not terrible, but it’s usually sometime in February where winter starts to wear on me. However, so far, I’ve been able to get out and bike, feel good, etc.. So, GET OUT THERE! Yes, it’s cold today. However, beautiful.  Take a walk. Play with your kids on the playground of a park. Feel alive!

Weekend weather looks fair and seasonably cold. Temperatures should be progressively going upwards after today from 40 today to almost 60 on Tuesday as a rain system comes in Monday-Tuesday time period.

Then after a very brief warm up the Polar Express arrives, and arrives loudly with a slap in the face after Tuesday. This, probably, will be our coldest shot of the winter. Now, along with this I’m just going to hint that there is the possibility of a storm signal around the 6th-8th of January. This COULD be our first, and hopefully not last, significant chance of a major snowstorm. The jury is still WAY OUT. So, there isn’t any need to get into specifics right now. I will just say that the set-up is perfect in the atmosphere for us to get a significant snowstorm in the first few weeks of January. Stay tuned!

Have a great weekend. Unless there is a significant development I will post on Monday  about the outlook for January and the storm signal for the 6th-8th of January.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

GRAPHIC:  Picture shows how cold it’s going to get across the country. Even all the way down to Texas. Florida, which has been burning up this winter, will even be “COOL”.

2017 WINTER SNOW TOTALS PREDICTIONS

PREDICT THIS SEASON’S SNOWFALL. WE ARE AT ZERO(TRACE) RIGHT NOW. SO, THERE IS NO PLACE TO GO BUT UP, UP, AND UP!! snow

January Temps And the “NEW NORMAL” THEORY for ALL SEASONS in Delaware(LONG POST)

I’m an optimist by nature. And to “Call” the winter, when were barely over a week into it, that would just be plain crazy and irresponsible. However, as many good signs as there are out there for snow lovers, there are about the same number of signs for those of us who wouldn’t mind seeing  winters around here be short on snow and cold.  I’ve been looking into this for the past few days, and it’s one thing to not have ANY measurable snow as of this time/date, but to see the Sahara desert in northern Africa have a dusting of snow for the first time in 37 years is saying a TON of things about our current climate in the atmosphere.

The set up for the first two weeks of January look very favorable for cold, and snow lovers. However, around here (Mid-Atlantic region) we have as our major enemy the oceans. The oceans air moves around towards the coast with warm air. We get it from the Atlantic, Delaware Bay, and the Chesapeake to our west. So, it has to be super cold for an extended period to set up storms to bring us snow. We have no issues with precipitation. However, when the precipitation gets here it’s always a question of temperatures in the winter. The famous “I-95” snow and ice line. Are you north, south, west, etc.. of 95? Typical. We hear it all of the time.

The graphic reflects about 1 to 1.5 degrees ABOVE normal for this time of year for this coming January. If you want lots of snow, that’s not a good picture I have up. Where is the cold? Canada, the western plains, the Rocky  Mountains, etc… That means the jet stream is taking storms further north above the lakes. And, if you’ve seen any weather model, the pattern SINCE November has been to take storms up and over us. Look how dry we were in the Fall? We went approximately a month without rain and were going to end the year in below average precipitation for the year by two inches. That’s significant.

So, if 43-44 degrees is our normal, were looking at 45-46 degrees as the “NEW NORMAL” and that means if you want snow we need a considerable cold snap to come in and do some damage to the atmosphere.  We can still and will continue to have snow in our winters, but the “NEW NORMAL” may be a lot less snow and just plain rain or freezing rain events. My theory is that the climate change that has taken place in the last 15 years has dramatically altered not extreme weather events, but the overall pattern of systems that shape our weather in the entire world. It’s not a reason for the climate change, but a symptom of a much larger problem we have in our environment.  Let me know your thoughts! screenshot-61

WORD ON THE STREET..NO SNOW FOR DECEMBER..JANUARY LOOKING MUCH BETTER THOUGH!

The potential for a measurable December snow are pretty much down to less than zero. It’s almost 60 degrees right now. Yet, there is a decent cold front coming through on Thursday that merits watching. However, for our area it would be more like just annoying weather to drive in. There is the potential for wet snow Thursday into Friday mixed with rain. And it would be scattered. So, one  area may see more wet snow flakes, while another area sees NADA.   We will have to watch it, but this will affect more areas to our north and west. The graphic pretty much sums up our winter picture as it relates to snow so far. screenshot-60

January is setting up to be an interesting month. It’s the heart of winter. Last January it was cold for the first half, got warm, then we got slammed with a blizzard. And that was pretty much the winter.  We have a set up where the POTENTIAL for a colder, snowier January is on the table. However, my confidence for that is moderate. Again, like I’ve said, you can have the cold, the right atmospheric conditions, etc.. However, if you don’t have the right system that tracks the wrong way and pushes more warm air into the equation then you have nothing. I am feeling our time will come. Like last winter, we just need to be patient. Lots of winter left folks!

Have a wonderful day!!

POST CHRISTMAS….NOT MUCH! Rain tonight. Colder later in the week. Kind of Meh.

I hope Santa Claus was good to you as he was to me. I had a tremendous Christmas! What was your favorite gift? Mine was my light winter jacket my wife gave me. Very nice! Santa was VERY good for her :}  And Santa made it through the weather to make all of his deliveries. He never fails. Never!

Well, this week should be an “OK” week of weather. As depicted the week looks pretty “MEH“. Not much going on, at least in the east. All the snow is out west. There is a storm signal for the end of the week towards New Year’s but that mainly looks wet not frozen. Then , as we enter the New Year, the pattern looks a little colder but still the tracks of the storms isn’t quite conducive to a pattern favorable for the Mid-Atlantic. Storms that come from the Gulf, or cut southeast from the west are more favorable tracks.  There has been above average snowfall in the interior portions of PA and NY , but the major cities have seen close to nothing.  So, it’s going to be kind of a waiting game. The second image shows that a cold trough will set itself up in the east come the end of the week, but temperatures are still too warm for an all snow event, or even seeing a wet flake.

Have a WONDERFUL day!
